AIDS diagnoses for blacks are higher than the rates of any other race/ethnicity. The rate of AIDS diagnoses for black adults/adolescents were 10 times the rate for whites and nearly 3 times the rate for Hispanics. The rate of AIDS diagnoses for black women was 22 times the rate for white women.

HUMAN INTONATION is dedicated to raising social awareness for today’s pertinent social & human rights issues through the creative element of fashion. HUMAN INTONATION hosted Women 2 Women HIV Roundtable Discussion, facilitator Dee Bailey (pictured next to me in red blazer) did a wonderful job in the flow of the conversations. I was blown away by the issues that were raised, but most importantly the goal of empowering Women of Colour to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS in this country. In the discussion, we came to a clear, and at times debatable points of ways to protect yourself every single time. You can be straight up- ask your partner when was the last time he was tested, and even demand that you see the "Quest Diagnostic" documents. Alongside communicating with your partner, its integral that you wear a condom each and every time of sexual contact. The question that then arised was, "how do you tell your boyfriend of 5 years that he must always wear a condom". This may create an issue of questioning infidelity. Your partner may start thinking you are stepping out on him, and honestly it can just be an awkward conversation for someone that you know is tested and safe. But according to one of the attendees, "Until you put a ring on it, you put a condom on it".

The conversation of HIV / AIDS should not only occur during World Aids Day or worse, finding out someone close to you has been infected, it needs to be spoken of frequently until Black Women are educated and empowered and stop being the main culprit of this sickness. We need to come together to start making an impact by developing this message. We can't depend on our churches to have this discussion because of the Christian views of waiting to engage in sexual activity until marriage, but lets face it that is not always the issue of people that are in church.

We all have a girlfriend who is loose or "sexually empowered" but lets face it after a certain age youre its not considered being a whore if you have sex often. I personally think it doesn't matter if youre 15- 25, or 50 if you are being sexually intimate and not protecting yourself that's a problem.

Before attending this roundtable, HIV / AIDS has never affected me or anyone else I know but actually this issue does affect me as a Black Women. For the first time I met someone that had HIV at this roundtable, it was strong...Im sure I've seen someone that was HIV positive on the subway, at the supermarket, but you truly never know until someone admits it. You can't tell someone is affected- just because you are pretty or handsome does not mean a damn thing. You must always protect yourself. The statistics are astounding.

In essence, you must continue this conversation now of HIV / AIDS with your friends, family, and circle of influence – talk to 5 to 10 people about it and challenge those ladies and men to talk to another 5 to 10 people. This is no longer taboo - Black women are affected every minute.

The Scent that changed my life

I value and perceive all of the facets of Beauty on a high pedestal, but I can't help but lean towards the color segment in the beauty industry. Fragrance has been neglected in my arsenal. I have a tower (literally) of color cosmetics, and a Skin care and Hair product closet solely for these products but my fragrance bottles are thrown randomly in a mesh drawer. Mind you, I rarely purchase fragrance as its something that I receive complimentary (I can't help it!) Needless to say I decided to take a trip to Saks Fifth Avenue for the Friends and Family sale Friday evening. My intention was to try out Giorgio Armani Complexion products such as their concealers and foundations. I was not impressed but could not help but take notice to all of the fragrance counters and pop ups. I stopped at the Guerlain counter and a lovely saleswoman immediately began to assist me, I smellled and smelled until I could smell no more. I was over it by the 6th bottle. I felt defeated and told her "I'm just not into Guerlain scents" She was determined to change my opinion. She says, try this one, its my favorite, it's called "Gourmand Coquin, it's french and its inspiration is from food and the love of cuisine" I checked out the bottle, it was cute, but next to the other geometric and intricate designed bottles, it seemed drab. I sprayed the scent on the fragrance stick and held it to my nose. My olgafactory senses opened, then I inhaled again, attempting to figure out what are the notes in this bottle, I'm getting chocolate, but rose, and the elusive note was killing me.

Of course I didn't display excitement to the saleswoman, didn't want her to think that she won my seal of approval just yet. So I just walked away from her without looking back and got an opinon from a fellow Beauty lover. She thought it was wonderful, I KNEW it was wonderful and walked back to the saleswomen and said, "It smells amazing".

This scent is not remeniscent, it doesn't remind me of anything in the past such as my mother getting dressed for a party back in the 80s, or listening to jazz in Washington DC, as my other perfumes, this one didn't spark any past memories because this scent is my future. I even told my friends, "this will be the scent that I have on at my wedding".

As I considered this very important purchase, she tells me, its 10% off which is wonderful, but she then says its $250. WHATTTTT?!! I mean, beautiful scent or not, I am not spending $250 on a bottle of amazing, heartwarming, scentsational elixir called Gourmand Coquin.

But its two days later and I'm posting about it.....What should I do?! and what if....gasp....Guerlain decides to discontinue it.
To buy or not to buy

It's Been Too Long....

Wow!
I think it's been nearly two months since I last posted on this thing. When life happens, well, you've gotta live! I've been busy living life, and that's all there is to it. I am currently in my last year of graduate school and looking to pursue a Doctoral or MD program. I'm on the hustle. So while Portia has been chronicling her job search stories, I'm trying to chronicle my application, thesis, and professional netowrking experiences. It has been somewhat challenging to balance both the academic and social realm, however, I am more than a conqueror and I've been rather successful in my conquest.

The Thesis: I chose to look at perceptions of obesity amongst public health students and the implications it has for future health policy and public health initiatives. I'm currently going through the University's IRB processs, and that is an experience in of itself. Thank God for a wonderful advisor and benefactors who have aided me along the way. The key to a successful thesis project is establishing realistic deadlines and measurable outcomes. The goal for September: survey roll out to study participants.... I'll let you know how that goes

DrPH or MD?: That is the question. I attended a career workshop this past weekend, and one of the things the keynote speaker told me was that I am confused about my long-term goals. I am equally concerned about Prevention and Treatment; however, I'm debating where my impact will be most felt. I'm simultaneously applying to DrPH, Post-Bacc, and Medical school programs. One thing is for sure: my purpose lies in the medical field.

Professional Networking: I've kinda become lapse in this regard. I don't attend many happy hours these days and I haven't attended a conference in a while. The CBC conference in this week, so I may try to hit up a couple of events. Afterall, it was at last year's CBC that I learned of the opportunity to be a contributor to Empower News Magazine. There are some upcoming Health Reform Conferences and Hearings that I may try to attend, so that's also great. OOOO and my professors this semester are bomb! One of my professors is the former Public Health Commissioner of Massachusetts and the other one is a figurehead in the field of Public Health. I'm trying to be the best student possible :)

The concert takes place on 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance at Madison Square Garden. Another week of searching continues! Even though I really don't like sitting at the computer job searching, I feel compelled to because I don't want to miss out on any great opportunities. But instead of logging onto a website and searching for hours, sign-up to have emails sent to you based on the type of jobs you're looking for. I signed-up on Idealist for jobs that are categorized under "youth, event planning, social media, public relations", and everyday I get an email with jobs that match my key words. It saves me a lot of time and narrows my search down to 13 - 15 jobs a day that align with my interests and strengths. I also don't waste my time applying to every job that's emailed to me; I focus on the 2 or 3 that are good match and where I can make significant contributes to the company. Don't get discouraged in your search!

Yes, another week of searching has come upon me. I've been reading a lot of articles about landing that dream job and most of the advice falls into one category; be bold! If you really want a position at a company,boldly let me them know. Start a "Hire Me" blog, if you don't like writing then make a Youtube video explaining why they should hire you, call HR and ask to speak to the hiring manager, write a Facebook Note explaining why you're a perfect fit for the position, and I even read in Glamour this month that a woman screen printed her resume on her t-shirt. I like it; do what you have to do to get noticed. But a word of caution, don't slid from the realm of driven to annoying. Show them you're passionate, but don't call the CEO everyday leaving messages. Don't get discouraged in your search!

He's a cutie, but he's also a young one

I look young, but I know I don't look like a teenager anymore. However, this doesn't seem to stop the 16 - 18 year-old group from trying to talk to me when I'm out during the day. They pretty much all say the same thing, "Hi, what's your name? Can I get your number?" I just laugh them off when they tell me they're 17 or 18 years-old. I think younger guys try to talk to us because they have no fear. They're at the age where they don't really care if women pay any attention to their wooing because they can move on to the next girl. I wonder if older men lack this fearlessness because they seem more hesitant to approach women with that "young care-free" attitude. I'm not sure if they're looking for something more serious or if they're just afraid of getting their feelings hurt. Well guys, I say you have to get over that and think back to your younger days. Just take a chance and say, "Hi, what's your name?", it just might work next time.

I'm still on the hunt for a new career path and thinking of more ways to step-up my job search. This week, I'm thinking of ways to use alumni connections. Do you pay a membership fee for your college alumni service? If you do, then make the most use of your resources during your job search. If you find a position you're really interested in, search your alumni directory to see if an alum works at the company you're interested in. Email the person before you apply for the job and ask them about the organization's culture and the type of employees they look for. I'm sure they'll be more than willing to talk to you, especially if you went to a school with lots of pride like my alma mater UNC. They might even be able to give you the hiring manager's contact information or forward your resume to the right person. Don't get discouraged in your search!

Another week of job searching began today and this week I'm thinking about more ways to put myself out there. You know, let the world know that I'm looking for a new career. One good way to showcase your talents is through freelancing. Our very own Beautylicious is a phenomenal beauty maven and makeup artist. She has done freelance work for a music video, a few MTV programs, and a wedding. She earns (side hustle) money for her work, gains exposure, and meets more people to add to her network. Not everyone has to be a stellar makeup guru to freelance, do something you do better than most people. You can try event planning, writing, wardrobe styling, or even cooking for a busy family. And promoting yourself has never been easier; between Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Craigslist someone is bond to find you. The most important thing to do is document your work! Take tons of pictures and save all your sample and those doors will open soon. Don't get discouraged!

My new approach to job searching cont...

Yes, the search for employment continues! Another week, another round of hustling, web searching, emailing, and applying. Remember how I said I was trying to meet with people in person, even if they don't have a job opening posted? Well, the best thing I've learned about this is not to get discouraged if the person says they don't have any openings now, because they could have openings later. And if they say "send me you resume and keep me posted on your progress", then send them your resume no later 2 days after you meet them and a short email every 2 to 3 weeks letting them know how things are going. Building relationships is essential when job searching because sometimes its not what you know, but who you know. When employers do have openings later, you'll be one of the first people to find out.

The most interesting Real Housewives are back for a second season; The Real Housewives of Atlanta: Season 2 premieres tonight on Bravo. This season a new housewife, Kandi Burruss replaces Deshawn Snow (she was just a little too boring for a Bravo show). Kandi was in the group Xscape and made quite a career for herself writing music for TLC, Mariah, and Whitney. I wonder how she will fit in with the rest of the women. The first ATL season was the highest rated of all the Housewives shows, but there was often talk of a racial double standard for the ladies in Atlanta. It was will interesting to see people's reaction to this season and how the women will be portrayed. Will you be watching?

My new approach to job searching

I may have only graduated last year, but I'm looking to start a new career path. Its better to search for the perfect job that aligns with my strengths now than later. I'm deep into my job search but, I really don't like sitting at my computer and looking for opportunities on the internet. However, I am torn between this love/hate battle of internet searching. The reason why I don't like applying to opportunities on the internet is because I feel like everyone is doing this now and my resume just gets lost in the shuffle and various databases. But, there's a part of me that pushes myself to search because I don't want to miss out on any amazing opportunities.

Since I'm the type of person that doesn't like staying in the house, I knew I would loose my mind sitting inside looking for jobs all day. So, I've decided to volunteer (one of my favorite things to do!) to meet new people and gain experience. I also try to set up "informational" meetings with at least one new person a week. If you're looking for a new job, I suggest finding a new approach that works for you. Maybe you're really social and like going to events and happy hours. Go out and network until you can't network anymore! Or maybe you like to share your feelings with the world on Facebook. Write notes about why people should hire you and maybe people with openings at their jobs will contact you. I'll keep you posted on how my new approach works and definitely share your ideas with us.

Many of these students will never leave Kenya or their villages but Boundless Books will allow them with an opportunity to travel anywhere in their world with the use of their imagination while reading books donated by the community. Boundless Books is something special because Maureen believes that every child should fall in love with reading. It must be the Obama Effect

I watched CNN's Black in America 2 last night and was genuinely surprised about how positive the program was. If you remember last year's documentary, it focused on the aspects of the black community that mainstream media sees far too often. We saw mothers on welfare, kids in poor neighborhoods, and deadbeat dads. But this year we saw kids in poor neighborhoods travel to South Africa to help those that are less fortunate than them, a charter school that sends 100% of its students to college, and a glimpse into the world of black elitist. People use the concept of the "Oprah Effect" the explain her show's influence on businesses and people featured on her show, but I think the "Obama Effect" has an effect on how mainstream media portrays African-Americans. Don't get me wrong, the media still has a a very long way to go, but I am seeing slight changes. Desiree Rogers on the cover of The Wall Street Journal magazine, more news stories about the positive effects Obama's presence is having on young men, and charities featuring commercials with African-American athletes making differences in their community. The Obama family has only been in the White House for 6 months, so it will be interesting to see if the trend of positive images increases during his term. I hope it does because we're a people of so much more than shooting hoops and entertainment; we're leaders, pioneers, and change-makers.

Courting: a man's courting of a woman; seeking the affections of a woman; to seek someone's love. So when was the last time a man actually courted you? What happened to the times when a young man would actually put effort into to getting your attention and treating you like a lady? Prime example, a guy you barely knows tells you he wants to take you out and then gets mad if you say, "no thanks." Its not that we don't want to go out with them, but it would be nice if they actually put some effort into the art of asking a woman out on a date.

I personally think if a guy is really interested in you, he'll find out what your interests are and ask you out on a date based that you would truly enjoy. And the only way he can plan that amazing date is if he genuinely gets to know you for you. A few phone conversations about your interests is all it takes. Yes, I think its time for courting to make a comeback.

WWD reported that Forever 21 is launching a new makeup line later this year. I can count on this retailer to purchase last minute cute trends and accessories that are destroyed by one wash, and tarnished by a few wears.
I am all for supporting cosmetic companies, but am I really going to purchase a foundation, blush, or lip stick from Forever 21?
Most likely, the demographic here would be teenage teeny boppers so don't expect a sexy Lipstick or a vibrating Mascara.

I generally hate when retailers do this, add cosmetics to their repetoire because they sell a mass amount of shoes, clothing, or perfume. However, some retailers have managed to get it right i.e. Victoria Secret Beauty and H&M Cosmetics shown below. (sold in Europe EYEROLL!)

I hate to be Negative Nia, but I'm not rushing to buy Forever 21 makeup when it debuts. Think about it, there Lipgloss is sticky and runs dry immediately!

Facing your Fears

I read a great article in July's Issue of Cosmo about facing your fears. The writer basically said people often miss out on amazing opportunities because they're scared of what could happen. Think about it, you're sort of happy with your boyfriend and now that you deserve someone that treats you better. But you don't break-up with him because you're afraid of being alone. Or you hate your job, but you're not 100% sure about what career you want to pursue. I understand that jumping into a new situation is very scary because you don't know what will happen. Well it is time to face your fears; time to live and let go. You don't have to do anything drastic, take baby steps. Change your hair style or wear a color you would never usually wear. And one-day, you'll be able to take that huge step to making that life changing decision.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Barack Obama announced his intent to nominate Regina M. Benjamin as Surgeon General, Department of Health and Human Services.

President Obama said, “Health care reform is about every family’s health and the health of our economy. And if there’s anyone who understands the urgency of meeting this challenge in a personal and powerful way, it’s the woman who will become our nation’s next Surgeon General, Doctor Regina Benjamin. I look forward working with her in the months and years ahead.”

Regina M. Benjamin, MD, MBA, is Founder and CEO of the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. She is the Immediate Past-Chair of the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, and previously served as Associate Dean for Rural Health at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. In 2002, she became President of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, making her the first African American woman to be president of a State Medical Society in the United States. Dr. Benjamin holds a BS in Chemistry from Xavier University, New Orleans. She was in the 2nd class at Morehouse School of Medicine and received her MD degree from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, as well as an MBA from Tulane University. She completed her residency in family medicine at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. Dr. Benjamin received the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights in 1998, and was elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees in 1995, making her the first physician under age 40 and the first African-American woman to be elected. Dr. Benjamin was previously named by Time Magazine as one of the "Nation's 50 Future Leaders Age 40 and Under.” She was also featured in a New York Times article, "Angel in a White Coat", as "Person of the Week" on ABC's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, and as "Woman of the Year" by CBS This Morning. She received the 2000 National Caring Award which was inspired by Mother Teresa, as well as the papal honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice from Pope Benedict XVI. The death of Michael Jackson has been an eye opening, saddening, memory clad series of events throughout the past week. Radio stations have played everything from 1980s "Beat It" to post 2000 "You Rock My World". CNN has been glued to this story with developing news each hour alongside other news networks. There have been numerous talks of tributes-first to go were the BET AWARDS on Sunday evening. I won't post negative energy today but to say the least, that award show was a disgrace and should not have taken such a feat to dedicate a show to MJ days after his death if they couldn't follow through with adequate tributes and performances.

Clubs and Party halls have dedicated nights to solely playing Michael Jackson songs, better known as "Michael Jackson parties". Floral and paraphernalia memorials have been made at the young MJ home in Gary, Indiana to his Neverland Ranch in California. Michael had a strong fan base of young to old, black to white, gay and straight. My childhood has been shaped around Michael Jackson videos amd song. I was terrified of Thriller up until I turned 13 years old. One of my favorite memories are from watching the video, "The way you made me feel" and how Michael was chasing this beautiful woman around the street trying to get her attention. I learned from that point how to play hard to get and keep a man wanting more. Or how about the Sunday night premiere of "Black and White" after watching In Living Color. To this day if "Don't Stop Till you get enough" plays in the club, my girls and I dance harder to that song then any other 2009 club hit.

Michaels death has hit me harder then any other celebrity as he truly had a major piece of my history.

Through "United We Serve" President Obama is calling on all Americans to give back and volunteer this summer. Serve.gov is a really great site because it allows you register a volunteer event you planned on the website and people can sign-up through there. Being a Make up Artist, I constantly get the question of, "Who has the best mascara" or "What mascara elongates and creates plush lashes?". Well I am going to give out my secret....DO NOT SLEEP ON DRUG STORE MASCARAS. I have short lashes, so I have to do a feature on the mascaras that has my lashes looking lush, plush, and makes the boys blush!

Maybelline by far sets the bar for other drug store mascaras. My recent purchase is Lash Stiletto. Its known for being "The only mascara that does for lashes what stilettos do for legs." I have been using this religiously during the weekdays for work because it elongates and darkens my lashes but still looks sophisticated enough for the boardroom. ($6.99 sold in drugstores nationwide)

This mascara is also by Maybelline and has won many Beauty Awards from Allure, Teen Vogue, and Essence Magazine. This pink and green mascara doesnt even need to say "Maybelline" it has a substantial amount of brand association, kindo like the Coca Cola bottle. I remember when it was was advertised on top of many New York yellow cabs last year. Fab Idea: Organize a Sunday Brunch

Sunday Brunches with your girlfriends is great but instead of just going out next time, make it an event. Send out brightly colored Evites and tell everyone you've having a Ladies Brunch. Choose a nice (but not too expensive) restaurant and ask them if they have a party room that you guys can have all to yourselves or a section of the outdoor seating. And if you're feeling really festive, ask them if you can decorate the room with bright tablecloths and flowers.

In your invite tell everyone they must wear a dress, no exceptions! Actually they can wear skirts too, but no pants! And remember to have tons of fun and take lots of pictures. If people respond well to the event, try to have one once a month.

Black Beauty is Profitable : Essence Panel Explores Beauty Purchasing

African-American women are vibrant shoppers of prestige beauty brands, but their biggest challenge is finding products that are effective and effectively marketed toward them. Such points were revealed last week at Essence’s Smart Beauty panel, which discussed the African-American woman’s shopping experience in the prestige beauty market.

Essence beauty and cover director Mikki Taylor led a discussion on the findings with celebrity makeup artist Sam Fine, dermatologist Rosemarie Ingleton and Candace Corlett, president of WSL Strategic Retail, at a breakfast at the Mandarin Oriental in Manhattan.

African-American women spend $7.5 billion annually on beauty products, but shell out 80 percent more money on cosmetics and twice as much on skin care products than the general market, according to the research. That difference comes as African-American women sample many more products to find the ones that are most effective on their skin.

“She spends a lot, but there’s little satisfaction. What keeps us buying is the hope that this product will do what it’s supposed to do,” said Fine.

The type of beauty goods she’s searching for, according to the findings, are brands she trusts, that reflect her personal style and offer high-quality ingredients. She’s also more likely to buy products from aspirational labels — Chanel lipsticks and Versace perfume, for example — than brands that are associated with celebrities.

Nevertheless, Fine said she believes African-American women are looking for affirmations of their own beauty through seeing spokespersons or models of color in ad campaigns for beauty products. One area that was void of faces of color were antiaging products, according to Fine.

“There’s no face of aging in the African-American community,” said Fine. “There’s Sharon Stone and Christie Brinkley, but no one who’s African-American.”

My Comments

As a self proclaimed Beauty Maven, I truly value and am inspired by black beauty and all that it defines. From the past entrepreneurs such as Madame CJ Walker, to the future - makeup artists and beauty editors that are the vehicles of getting the beautiful story out there to women in the black community.

I acknowledge that African American women are very beauty & hygiene conscious. We will have our hair done in the flyest lace front weave but can not afford to pay for rent. I have found myself in that predicament once or twice.

I do appreciate that many consumer brands have beautiful African American faces representing them. To name a few :

Beyonce : L'Oreal

Gabrielle Union : Neutrogena

Rihanna, Queen Latifah : Covergirl

Liya Kebede : Estee Lauder

Arlenis Sosa : Lancome

Angela Bassett : Olay

Nonetheless, there can never be too much representation of African American women in the cosmetic industry with the fact that it is known that we purchase 7.5 billion dollars worth annualy of cosmetics. I remember my dad taught me early, if there's not a black face on the magazine, why are you reading it? Of course I don't only read magazines that only feature African Americans, however I appreciate those more and will likely pay for subscription. Furthermore, many cosmetic lines have become diverse and feature more shades then the banal Ivory, Peach, and Beige. There are now Cocoa, Mocha, and Espresso shades. While we aren't where we should be with Black representation in the beauty industry, we are moving in the right direction and I intend on being a trail blazer to move this effort further.

Fab idea: Better organize your job search

I know a lot of people that on the prowl and searching their hearts out for a job. Some of my friends have literally applied to so many jobs and they can't even keep track anymore. But I think this is where people falter in their job search, we focus so much on applying to as many jobs as possible, that we forget which ones we applied to and forget about the follow-up. Here's a really simple idea: keep track of the jobs you've applied to in an excel sheet. Create headers like 'Employer", "Position", "Contact", "Date Applied", "Did I follow-up?", and so on. Even if you don't hear back from an employer, send an email a week later to see if the position has been filled and tell them you are still interested in the position. Happy hunting, and don't get discouraged!

If she is confirmed, she will be the first Latina Supreme Court justice and only the third female in the Court's history!! A few more reasons why she so fab; she grew up in the Bronx, had humble beginnings, and went to Princeton undergrad and Yale Law. But my favorite fact about Judge Sonia Sotomayor is that she has spent most of her career in public service law. Talk about the epitome of paying it forward!

Economic Downturn Forces Young Adults to Forgo Healthcare

There’s a recession outside. Times are rough and people everywhere are looking to make sacrifices to make ends meet. Worst off, these sacrifices take place in one of the most significant aspect of our lives: health care.

Due to economic hardship, approximately 47 percent of Americans report cutting back on healthcare spending to loosen up on budget restrictions. This number demonstrates an increase from the 42 percent originally reported in an April 2009 Kaiser Family Foundation Consumer Poll. Young adults of college age are the largest and fastest growing population of uninsured in the U.S. residents, despite their generally good health and relatively inexpensive premiums. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the young adult population is approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population and of that number, 29 million (23.9 percent) young adults, between the ages of 18 to 24, are uninsured. This percentage is significantly higher than the national average of less than 20 percent for uninsured adults. Without health insurance, a disproportionate number of young adults lose access to health services, forcing them to rely on community health centers, abandoning preventive treatment and services, or paying high out-of-pocket expenses in the event of an emergent or unexpected injury or illness. In a failing economy young adults tend to forgo health care and use their meager resources for food.

The increase of the uninsured among the young adult population raises concerns regarding the long-term impact of no coverage on the overall population and the potential rise of chronic disease of insolvency continues. Furthermore, the impact of embarrassment and stigma placed on young people seeking subsidies for access to health care serves as another barrier for young adults to facilitate ongoing utilization and participation in managing their health care. As Americans continue to experience tougher economic times, the health care system must come up with effective strategies that provide affordability and accessibility to medical services among the young adult population.

Effective strategies to address the difficulties of health care access will require the health care system to adopt a social perspective on health which includes providing a variety of interventions that are more youth and economically friendly, in addition to flexible. Partnerships with community health centers and young adult advocacy groups may prove valuable in outreach efforts to highlight the importance of having health care services. Advocating to state human services departments to provide subsidized funding, on a sliding scale, to those young adults who are unable to afford the entire cost of a premium may also assist in providing greater affordability amongst members of this promotion.

Additionally, there is a dire need to dispel the stigmas associated with attending health services or seeking federal/state subsidization to gain access to such services. Balanced health education and promotion programs are necessary to address the young adult population. Posters and other resources which promote relevant health services and programs can be instrumental in conveying to the young adult population that health care needs are a normal good and deemed significant among health care providers and health services.

Seeking to increase access and utilization of the health care system by young people requires an in-depth look at the poverty issues challenging a rising number of young people and their families. As the number of safety-net providers and clinic services continue to decline, disadvantaged young people will continue to forgo access to health care.

It is important that programs such as Medicaid and Medicare expand their eligibility criteria to meet the financial constraints confronting the young adult population. Also, state human services departments and various advocacy groups should develop policy recommendations that would alleviate some of the antiquated eligibility requirements that are necessary to participate in federal or state benefit programs.

Health care is not a privilege, it is a right. If the number of uninsured young adults continues to rise, long term cost on our health care system could be beyond devastating.

Go on a Work Out Date

I was talking to some girlfriends the other day and one said that she had gained weight when she had a boyfriend because they would go out to eat so much and just stay in the house. I see this issue arising in several relationships and I think it’s time people started going out on “work out” dates. If you’re like me, and don’t actually like going to the gym there are several alternatives:

Run outside: Get up on Saturday morning and take a run outside. And definitely take a scenic route through a park, by a lake, on a trail, or on the beach. Each other's presence will motivate you both to push yourselves. But if you're having trouble getting motivated, walk for a cause and sign-up for "The Race for the Cure" or "AIDS Walk." After you’re done running, have a healthy breakfast at home; oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, or a veggie omelet.

Go dancing: Whether its salsa, meringue, hip-hop, or even line dancing; just dance. If your beau doesn’t like to dance, bribe him with a little incentive. No guy really wants his girl going out and dancing with other dudes, so tell him he gets you all to himself the entire night. Salsa lessons at bars and restaurants are really popular and tell him salsa is a very sensual form of dancing.

Play a game of one-on-one: Hit up a local gym or outdoor court and hoop it up. Or you can keep it your house and play "Love and Basketball, I think we all know the scene I'm talking about. And neither of you have to be good at ball, just have fun.

Go to the golfing range: I have always wanted to date a guy that plays golf, so we can go to the golfing range and he can show me how to sink a whole in one. This is also a really time to talk with each other while you're playing. Oh, and you get to wear one of those cute skirts and sweater vest outfits.

Play Wii: The Wii is addicting! My favorites are boxing and tennis. I have worked up a sweat playing that boxing game against another person. Technically, you don't have to put in all your effort while punching, but where's the fun in that?

Go to the Gym: But take the best of both of your work-outs and combine them. Or take a class that both of you would like together; I recommend a boot camp class!

I've been trying to update my resume, but I was having a difficult time reflecting on all my work experience and actually remembering my accomplishments. Then I thought, this would be really easy if I had a job journal. Not a portfolio or collection of your work, but a journal where you keep track of your accomplishments. We get caught up in the day-to-day mundane tasks and we sometimes forget the great things and meaningful change we bring to our jobs. Keep post-its near you at all times so you can quickly write accomplishments down and save congratulatory emails. In fact, print the emails out (as long as they don't contain confidential information) and keep them folded in your journal.

So, the next time you want to update your resume, you'll have a great go-to place that houses all the wonderful things you've done during work experiences. And get creative with your journal, decorate the cover with inspirational people and pictures of your goals (like that house in the Hamptons you're going to buy once you make it!)

The White House Correspondent's Dinner was this past Saturday. The dinner is basically a big party for members of the media that work for newspapers, magazines, radio, television, or other forms of media and regularly report about the White House. The Who's Who of the political, journalism, and celebrity world all come out to celebrate the White House Correspondent Assocation. But becoming a member of the WHCA isn't as easy as it sounds, you definitely have to apply and be accepted. Perhaps I'll get an invite to this dinner one day; I would love it.

Friday Night: (Black) Chick Flick Night

Sometimes my work week wears me down to the last drop of energy I have, and I am super tired by Friday. When you're that tired you don't fell like going out. But we're also young and don't want to be anti-social by staying the the house. Here's a fab Friday idea that combines being social and staying in; host a (Black) Chick Flick night at your place. Invite a few of your girlfriends over and watch your favorite movies. Pretty much anything with Sanaa Lathan in it is a go. In my opinion, a few essentials are Brown Sugar, Love & Basketball, Waiting to Exhale, Love Jones, and Dream Girls. I'm sure any of the movies you select will generate great conversions before, during (you know you have girlfriends that talk during movies), and after you watch.

And feeding people shouldn't be too expensive. Try Asian food snacks; get a couple boxes of egg rolls and pot stickers. Lettuce wraps are also really easy to make; get a head of lettuce, a package of chicken breast and marinate them in mixture of soy sauce, brown sugar mixed with water, hot mustard, maybe some ginger, and chopped onions, carrots, etc (get creative!). Shimmer the chicken in a frying, cut it up, top with some crushed peanuts, and have people fill their lettuce cups themselves. See, that was easy! Have a Fab Friday Night!

Fab Friday calls for fab videos. Chrisette Michele is back and released her second album this Tuesday. Her first single "Epiphany" has the perfect tempo and catchy beat that makes a song easy to put on repeat. I suggest listening to this when you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed. First Lady Michelle Obama and Talk Show Host, Oprah Winfrey are pictured with one another at Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World Gala. The event took place at the Time Warner Center on Columbus Circle and was hosted by talk show host Jimmy Fallon. Both Barack and Michelle Obama were selected as two of the world's 100 most influential people.

Swine Flu Claims the Life of an American: 33 year old mother from TX

Even though folks are telling you not to believe the hype, Swine Flu is real and it has claimed the life of an American-- a 33 yr. old school teacher, from Texas, who just gave birth to a newborn!

This week should have been a joyous time for Judy Trunnell, a 33-year-old schoolteacher who had just given birth to a healthy baby girl.

But the friends and relatives whose cars lined the quiet street in front of her home in a quiet subdivision Tuesday instead were mourning her, the first American with swine flu to die.

“We’re grieving now,” said a woman with tear-streaked eyes who declined to give her name.

In Maryland, her cousin told WMAR-TV in Baltimore that Trunnell had died after spending two weeks in the hospital. She slipped into a coma, and her baby was delivered by Cesarean section, Mario Zamora said.

Usually, I'm not a fan of KFC but this grilled chicken looks delicious and healthier than a regular KFC meal. !Feliz Cinco de Mayo!: Have a Mango Margarita

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Enjoy Mexican culture and food today. Here's a recipe for a yummy Mango Margarita (make mine non-alcoholic please!):

Ingredients
For the Mango Margarita Mix:

* 1 1/4 pounds fresh mangoes (it's warm now, so they should be cheap)
* 1 cup water
* 1/2 cup sugar
* Gray salt

For the drink:

* 3 cups ice
* 1 1/2 cups Mango Margarita Mix
* 4 ounces tequila (skip the tequila if you're making it non-alcoholic)
* 2 ounces triple sec (skip the triple sec too and substitute diluted pineapple juice, yum!)
* Lime wedges
* Mint Salt, recipe follow
o 1 cup of fresh mint leaves
o 1 cup of gray or course sea salt

Directions:

For the drink:

* Peel the mangoes and cut them into large chunks
* Place cut mangoes in a blender with the water and sugar and blend until smooth
* Then, fill the blender with the ice, mango mix, tequila, and triple sec; blend until smooth

For the mint salt:

* Clean and dry the mint leaves
* Chop the mint leaves up
* Mix chopped leaves with the salt and use a big spoon to grind it all together
* Rim your glass edge with lime wedges and dip into the Mint Salt

Although im a few days late a dollar short, I totally forgot to post about this party, it was great, it was for the introduction of there Mango Absolut flavored liquer. It was open bar all night with mango decorations and amazing music at venue SPACE. I think in today's economy it's really beneficial & smart to have events such as this to promote the brand and get people buzzed so that the results are that they are economically inclined to purchase at their next personal shindig. In my own mind I am officially the "Absolut Mango Girl".
